The Near Miss (#3)

“We’re two blokes in the middle of the Atlantic. We have oars, a satellite phone, two GoPros, some freeze-dried food, a Dropbox Business subscription and Justin Bieber on repeat. Home is miles away. Barbados, our target, is miles away. We’ve met sharks and whales, 30 foot waves and had near misses with three gigantic cargo ships. This is our Dropbox journey to the cloud.”

The physical strains of our voyage are killing us. It’s called ‘the claw’. We’re taking it in turns to row for two hours, and rest for two. And the only thing helping us prepare for the next two hours of grueling labour is Lacrosse. Who’d have thought that?

The mental stuff gets to you too. Rowing all through the night only to realise your efforts are barely keeping you stationary. Last night was like someone had strapped 50kg weights to the oars.

Note to self (selves?) – keep the AIS on at ALL times. AIS, our automatic tracking system, has been off for a while as it was draining too much energy. But a very near miss with a gigantic cargo ship today has changed our thinking on that.

The third of our Tempest Two series which follows the boys on their Dropbox sponsored journey across the Atlantic.
