The cloud: Helping schools move from informal to formal digital learning

“There are massive long term benefits for making the investment in the cloud.” Lord Jim Knight, Chief Education Advisor, TES Global.

Having been Chief Education Advisor for TES Global for over a year now, Lord Knight admits schools have a huge technology challenge on their hands; trying to smooth the journey from informal to formal digital learning.

Pupils are using Dropbox, Slack and other tools regularly at home, but these ‘collaboration tools’ he says, rarely find their way into the classroom. But why?

According to Lord Knight, it all falls down to a perception of risk. ‘With budgets tight and education technology advancing quickly, it’s a tough time to be a leader in a school - and an even tougher time to take a risk. If IT leaders perceive technology to be a risk, which unfortunately many of them still do, they will simply not make the investment.”

At Bett, Lord Knight took time out to chat to us in more detail about the technology challenges facing UK schools, and the opportunities presented by a more collaborative approach to learning.
